In the current crisis, Cabinz Cic & SAHBN are looking for partner groups to distribute low cost, high quality fixings to build shelters for the storage of possessions & animals of the evicted, make green houses, or work / play spaces

As detailed in many recent articles like this...:  Britain Is Heading Into a Nightmarish Winter

We at Cabinz cic & SAHBN are concerned about the lack of preparation and a shortage of available low cost building materials. Therefore we have raised funding and bought materials to offer large stocks to build shelters in gardens, or inside buildings.

They can also be used to repair sheds / fencing / green houses in the coming winter storms

This includes 1000 castor wheels, 500m threaded bar, millions of screws/ nails /bolts, 800 hinges, 500m of new grp roofing sheets.

We wish to partner with groups (not individuals ) who will recruit volunteers and gather local reusable materials to build these shelters.

We can post fixings, castors wheels, hinges, locks etc at low cost to construct these shelters. Below are some ideas for building some parts of these shelters which we have experimented with using our materials .

We may be able to provide details of suppliers of new clearance stock and reusable building materials in some areas

Contact us on for further details

Free pallets are put on castors, so they are temporary structures easily moved to maximise space use

we used composite plastic offcuts to build frames to screw grp sheets we sell to build shorage sheds or green houses like our previous prototypes

We can sell low cost mobile shelving units to distribute tools & fixings

Cabinz have a network of nationally able charities & businesses to supply low cost materials to build shelters such as these new kitchen doors in the pics

Air extraction / heating equipment pipe and fixings are for sale, which is easily adapted for wood burning chimneys . pipes are in 3m & 6m lengths

Platforms are available to work ar low heights or as walkways across boggy or floooded land

(pics of platforms with low cost HD buckets supported walkways below)

Low Cost Raised Walkways for flooded or boggy areas with a fencing / handrail option that can be used as large flower pots / fencing when not in use as platformed walkways

Flooded property access  - Heavy Duty bucket supported walkway idea

This project is related to previous work on raised footing & supports . and is a work in progress

We have a stock of aluminium framed bufalo board wood platforms that with minimal fixings can be temporarily fixed to large heavy duty buckets with lids in various configs .

These can be free standing , attached to an existing fence that may be used as a hand rail or plastic composite door off cuts fencing can be installed.

From our previous work with composite door off cuts these can also be made into platforms

We can get buckets & lids at low cost , they are filled with rocks & soil available on site (no transport / energy use)

The platform can be removed, when flooding subsides and a smaller flower pot placed on top with a hole in the base. This will match up with a similar hole in the lid or base of the bucket., possibly  allowing water / roots / worms between the two buckets  .

This top will be removed & replaced when the platform is to be put into use, This should preserve the flowers & reuse the bucket / contents, providing an attractive row of flowers / pots .

Platforms could also be made from flood damaged wood  / metal furniture.

A prototype platform is being made using a 1m wide sheet of metal sided sanswich panel from tata steel / kingspan , strenthened with side beams of plastic composite or wood . connected together with 1m threaded bar

Firm standing and ixing buckets to the ground

In sone circumstances the buckets may need to be fixed to the ground. if the weight inside is not heavy enough ot stop movement when walked on

If the bucket is installed upright a hole could be drilled into the bottom & metal pegs or expanding bolts into concrete / tarmac

If installed on rd pavement . bucket can be upside down with lid on , expanding bolts can be drilled  through side lip & lid into ground , may 2 or 4 ?

on grass / soil the upside dwon bucket can be fastened with L or J shape pegs made from threaded bar , the thread will help stop the pegs coming out of ground, especially if hammered in at an angle

Flagstones or other footing may be required for buckets to rest on to stop sinking into boggy soft ground

Fixing platforms to bucket tops

Spacers may need to be used between the bucket & platform edge sides.

This could be by hex / coach / nuts /bolts or threaded bar . the bucket handle holes could perhaps be utilised to hold a trapped nut

Enquiries are being made to trail this in a local are that is flooded regularly

Most appropriate sizes ar 25 L & 20 L buckets

Relevant sizes of buckets R to L, 25l , 20L 15L 10L

Cabinz CIC & The SHELTER & HARDWARE BANK NETWORK are looking for partner groups to start their own 'Emergency Shelter Distribution Centres' (ESDC) or mobile 'Hardware & Fixings Stations'

As factories have  been closing or downsizing during covid, we have been busy buying material handling and storage equipment at very low cost, to supply a pallet sized package of shelving , steps & trolleys so groups can start their own small hardware distribution point.
We are calling these 'Emergency Shelter Distribution Centres' (ESDC) or mobile 'Hardware & Fixings Stations' and it is open to social businesses or community groups for their buildings or even shed or garages.
If you are a Uk community group, charity or social enterprise and are interested, please get in touch via email at  for further details

The aim of these initiatives is to distribute low cost or free fixings & building materials (as funding allows) to allow people on low income to repair or build simple green houses / cloches, insulated home work /storage sheds or animal shelters. We believe these will be greatly needed when furlough ends.

Many building materials including fixings have greatly increased in price recently. There was an article in the Guardian a few months ago about shortages, the situation may have become worse due to the Suez Canal blockage.

"Builders are running short of everything from power tools and screws to timber and roof tiles as the gridlock at UK ports holds up crucial deliveries and sets off alarm bells in the run-up to Brexit. "

"Timber is of particular concern (the price is up between 20% and 40% because of supply problems in Scandinavia)...

As we have not been able to do the markets this year due to covid,  we have been supplying groups by post & online initiatives .
Thankyou to the community groups. charities & small businesses once again for buying at low cost or accepting donated fixings from us this year.
Cabinz have been supplying NCWRP members with 500 kg crates and other fixings orders.
Those supplied recently have been We're eco in Somerset, Northampton wood recycling and members in Edinburgh,Glasgow & E.Sussex
We still have several million fixings in stock and would like to work further with charities, & small biz, perhaps in conjunction with our shelving and insulated floor / wall panels, we have recently purchased that could form a hardware dept. with other groups to encourage a repair culture & low cost shelter building.
We have a thousand new & used castor wheels in stock at low cost if you want to make them mobile.
With partners. we have also been running trials of hardware sections in furniture reuse charities & supplied fixings supply initiaitives in scrap stores.

A few months ago we offered NCWRP members 6000m of very low cost insulated wall sandwich panels for reuse from demolition, we still have access to this material, from suppliers who are keen to support us.      .

There was particular interest from suppliers of refrigerated rooms for food banks
 to reuse the panels.
My Pics taken 2-5-21 in B&Q in Rhyl show many shelves in the screw & hardware dept. empty. When asked. a member of staff said it was due to the recent Suez canal blockage

 Please share this intiative.

First Prototype of a Low cost Danish Trolley Type Mini Green House on Wheels from Off Cuts & Reused Materials for Home Growing Fruit and Veg

This first rough prototype is designed to go against a wall

Reusing new off cuts & over runs of composite plastics (that would normally be landfilled) to make a mobile trolley with a shelf and a raised bed on the base . The opaque grp sheets are very strong & flexible, so peels back from the middle to form opening doors.

The protruding sides, shields seperately floor mounted potted fruit /veg from the wind

It is designed be as low cost as possible, the sharp edge of the grp sheet has been covered with slit used bicycle inner tubes, available free from most bike shops

The base is rot reistant riveted aluminium frame box section with buffalo board treated plywood floor
